In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, law abiding citizens of New Orleans were unconstitutionally stripped of their Second Amendment rights when police went around, disarming citizens under the pretense of public safety.
Apparently too eager to wait for the next natural disaster to perform the same egregious overreach of governmental power, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo hinted at the possibility of implementing absurdly extreme gun control measures which could include confiscation.
Remember: just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you…
Speaking in thinly-ambiguous terms that should make every gun rights advocate American incredibly nervous, Cuomo discussed on a radio show the possibility of several new gun control measures that could include confiscation or a mandatory governmental buyback- which is just a fancy phrase for “confiscation with reimbursement”
“Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D-N.Y.) said Thursday that all options, including confiscation and ‘mandatory sales to the state,’ would be on the table next month when the New York State Legislature debates new gun control measures. The comments were specifically aimed at what might happen should stricter rules be imposed on ‘assault’ weapons and high-capacity magazines.
The governor said he plans on proposing a package of gun legislation in his State of the State address on Jan. 9.
‘There’s a big difference of opinion on these issues,’ Gov. Cuomo said today during a radio interview with Albany’s WGDJ-AM.”
Yeah, there’s definitely a big difference of opinions. There are those that know the value of freedom and there are those that think the words “shall not be infringed” is a coy phrasing for “shall only be infringed by ‘common sense’ gun control measures as defined by contemporary politicians.”
“The governor also explained that he would focus his attention on changing state laws regarding the possession of what the media confusingly calls ‘assault weapons’ (‘there’s no real definition of the term,’ the Washington Examiner’s Tim Carney notes) and high-capacity ammunition magazines.
New York’s existing ban on those items has ‘more holes than Swiss cheese,’ said the governor.
“I don’t think legitimate sportsmen are going to say, ‘I need an assault weapon to go hunting,’” he said.
However, he was also careful to note that he owns and regularly hunts with a shotgun, saying, ‘There is a balance here — I understand the rights of gun owners; I understand the rights of hunters.’”
Liberals love to try to disarm (pun intended) gun rights arguments by saying, “I’m alright with hunting. But nobody needs an ‘assault weapon’ to hunt.” But what I’ve always wondered is, “Who said anything about hunting?”
Surely there are more uses for a gun than hunting geese. We cannot get sucked into the trap of playing on their terms. We cannot pretend that every gun is only purchased to put food on the table. Some buy for collecting purposes. Some buy for self-protection. Some buy because they’re fun and, yes, some buy those scary “assault weapons” because someday we may have to protect what is ours from people who want it. There is no “justification clause” in the Second Amendment. I don’t ask Mr. Cuomo about his business; I will thank him to stay out of mine.
“During the course of the interview, Gov. Cuomo didn’t outline any specific gun control measures, but he did say the following: ‘Confiscation could be an option. Mandatory sale to the state could be an option. Permitting could be an option — keep your gun but permit it.’”
“Confiscation” can never be an option in a free country. And if the state wants to buy my firearms, they can make me offer.
We must be willing to call out tyrants when we see them. Seldom does a tyrant make a lunge for the population’s guns- they coax it out over the course of years. We must be ever-vigilant against talks of confiscation being an “option.”
